This Issue's Topic: CopyFit

WHAT IS “COPYFIT”?
CopyFit is a tool inside of DesignMerge that automatically ensures that variable text data will not overflow the intended text box. In the event that the variable text should overflow the textbox, CopyFit will resize the text - according to the parameters defined by the user - to ensure that all intended copy is included on the page.

WHY IS COPYFIT IMPORTANT?
Without CopyFit, it is possible - even likely - that during a print run some of the records may force variable text outside of the defined text area - the varying data may be too big to fit into the defined space. Printing a job that is missing intended data is an obvious disaster.
To counter this scenario, CopyFit will monitor the print run, and in cases of text overflow, CopyFit will alter the point size, tracking, horizontal scaling, leading, and the space before and after the paragraph (or any combination thereof) based on your defined parameters. And, as DesignMerge is running inside of QuarkXPress, those parameters are based on the text handling characteristics of QuarkXPress itself, not some other application's idea of text hyphenation and justification. In the case of run-arounds and related text formatting, the copy will re-flow as needed.

HOW DOES COPYFIT WORK?
You define the parameters, assign those to a text box, and CopyFit does the rest.
Under the View menu in QuarkXPress, select the Show CopyFit Palette command. This will open the interface to define the CopyFit parameters. Next, select the textbox in need of "CopyFitting". Inside the CopyFit palette, select the items to be modified by CopyFit (point size, leading, etc) and define the range for each parameter. For example, the parameters for editing the point size might have a minimum of 10 pt. and a maximum of 12 pt. CopyFit would then remain within this range when re-sizing text.

CopyFit can be set to Shrink to Fit or Expand to Fit, or it can do Either Method. It also has up to 10 presets; you can define 10 different sets of parameters for 10 different styles of copy, and the set name is fully editable.
When merging the file, you will see CopyFit in action; the text will literally shrink (or expand) to fit as the merge process advances through the datafile.

ADVANTAGES OF COPYFIT

  • Worry-free VI output - Your file will print as anticipated
  • Non-Stop printing - If a particular record will not fit during the print merge, based on your parameters, that page is excluded from the print and will be noted in the report generated at the end of the merge. You will be instructed which record to re-address; the rest of the job is sent to the print engine.Find Feature - CopyFit will scan your document and locate all instances that will create an overset text box.
  • Allow White Space - CopyFit can be set to ignore non-printing characters such as paragraph returns or tabs. Though these cause QuarkXPress to display an overset alert, CopyFit will ignore this and proceed to the next file.
  • Exclusive To DesignMerge - CopyFit is an exclusive DesignMerge technology.
